Young athletes excel at Saffron Lane

At the start of June, 21 pupils from Riverside Primary School took part in the annual South Charnwood Athletics Event held at Saffron Lane Stadium.

The children were tasked with competing against five other county schools – Gaddesby, Highcliffe, Bishop Ellis, St Peter & St Paul and Sileby Redlands – in a variety of both track and field events, such as the Vortex Throw, Standing Long Jump, 50m sprint and 600m race.

For many of the children, this was their first experience of competing on an full-sized, official running track, complete with a packed out stand full of friends and family who had come along to support.

All pupils demonstrated the school’s 6Rs and were commended for their behaviour and team spirit, cheering one another along throughout all the events.

There were numerous first place finishes for both the boys and girls which helped us to finish in second place in the Year 3/4 category – only 28 points off first – and fourth place in the Year 5/6 category.

A huge well done to all our competing pupils for their resilience and determination; you were fantastic role-models for our school!
